Every day fearless divers jump from dizzying heights off La Quebrada into the narrow inlet below to the applause and gasps of the crowd. The five daily cliff dives should be at the top of any Acapulco visitor's list.
Many of the divers have been practising from a young age. Diving at La Quebrada first attracted attention back in the 1930s, when a friendly game developed to see who could dive from the highest point - with the sea crashing against the rocks below, this was no easy task. The locals began requesting dives for a tip. The word soon spread.
In 1934 the group Clavadistas de La Quebrada (La Quebrada Cliff Divers) officially formed to give shows of their dexterity and skill. Today the divers are professional, taking part in competitions and demonstrations worldwide.
Unfortunately the dives are not without their accidents - there have been many broken bones and burst eardrums. Nevertheless, this amazing but risky feat is well worth seeing.
